According to the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, the link between Diabetes and oral health strongly exists: “Some studies show that those with gum disease have a harder time controlling their blood sugar. Similarly, infections can cause insulin resistance.” For children with diabetes, teeth may erupt at an age earlier than is typical. Diabetes is well known for affecting many areas of the body, including the kidneys and heart. However, did you know that Diabetes is also linked to oral health problems?
Children suffering from Diabetes are at an increased risk of developing periodontitis, an infection affecting the health of gums and bones in the mouth, along with other periodontal infections that may negatively affect glycemic control. What is the link, you might ask? One of the key factors in this correlation is blood sugar levels. When diabetes becomes improperly managed, white blood cells become weakened, and the body becomes less able to combat bacterial infections that occur in the oral cavity. This may result in symptoms such as bleeding gums, pain, and sensitivity. Similarly, studies have also shown that individuals with gum diseases have a higher difficulty controlling their blood sugar.
